Prince Harry may or may not be watching the upcoming installment of The Crown … depending on who you ask.

The hit Netflix historical drama launched the first part of its sixth and final season today, which follows the moments leading up to Princess Diana‘s death.

The UK’s The Telegraph‘s Royal Editor Victoria Ward reported today that Prince Harry is “expected” to tune into the new installment of The Crown, while his brother Prince William has never watched and is not planning on watching. A source close to Prince Harry told the outlet that they might screen the episodes before him in order to prevent him from viewing anything he may not want to see.

However, another source close to Prince Harry told Deadline that he would not be watching the final season because of the “sensitive nature” of its storyline.

Prince Harry has previously revealed that he’s watched the series. He told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show in January that he’s seen both “the older stuff and more recent stuff,” and shared that he fact-checks the show. According to The Guardian, he defended the show in a 2021 interview with James Corden, admitting that while not “strictly accurate,” it grants viewers a “rough idea” of the weight of “putting duty and service above family and everything else.”

In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince Harry opened up about the last phone call he had with his late mother.

“If I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things that I would — the things I would have said to her,” he recalled, per TODAY.com. “All I do remember regretting for the rest of my life how short that phone call is. Looking back now, I have to live with that for the rest of my life.”

According to CNN, in the 2019 documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, he described his mother’s death as a “wound that festers,” and discussed the negative impact of the paparazzi.

“I think being part of this family, in this role and this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back,” he said. “So in that respect, it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.”
