Jacob Elordi is seemingly dominating Hollywood’s biggest pictures, from embodying Elvis in Priscilla, to channeling some vintage Euphoria vibes in the upcoming Saltburn. However, in an interview with GQ, he recalled that he “didn’t want to make” the films that ultimately put his name on the map prior in the first place: The Kissing Booth trilogy.

“Those movies are ridiculous,” he bluntly told the magazine. “They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”

After the author of the profile noted that the Netflix rom-com trilogy fit the “one for them, one for me” concept — or when an actor takes a film they don’t necessarily want to make in the hopes of getting better work later — Elordi said such an idea is “a trap as well.”

“Because it can become 15 for them, none for you,” he continued. “You have no original ideas and you’re dead inside. So it’s a fine dance. My ‘one for them,’ I’ve done it.”

In a 2022 GQ profile, Elordi revealed that he fought for his bad boy character Noah Flynn to smoke cigarettes in the movies to more accurately emulate his character in Beth Reekles’ novel, which the films are based on.

“I was like, ‘This is bullshit!’ I remember going to war for it,” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Are we lying to the fucking millions of 14-year-olds out there? This guy smokes nicotine. It says here on page four — look!'”

According to Variety, Elordi’s Kissing Booth co-star, Joey King, felt quite the opposite, telling The Independent last year that she “couldn’t be prouder” of the trilogy.

“I loved them so much and playing that character made me happy,” she said at the time. “I’ll never regret those movies, and I love them so much no matter what anyone says.”

Nonetheless, Elordi reflected on his current status in film and the autonomy he seems to have in selecting the films he would like to take part in, clarifying, “That’s probably why I’m so happy.”

“Because now judgment and comments on the internet and stuff, it’s…,” he continued, ultimately settling on, “I’m in the movie now.”

All three The Kissing Booth films are streaming on Netflix.
