Sherri Shepherd Turned Down Barbara Walters’ Invitation to Join ‘The View’ 3 Times: “I Was Scared”

Sherri Shepherd came very close to never joining The View, but a little convincing from Eddie Murphy made it all possible.

The daytime talk show host admitted during Wednesday’s (June 14) broadcast of Sherri that she was initially too scared to join The View, so much so she turned it down multiple times.

“I remember when they asked me to do The View, I turned it down many, many times because I was scared to do it,” Shepherd said. “I didn’t want to do it because I didn’t know anything about politics, and I said, that’s not what I do, I’m a comic. And I fought it.

Barbara Walters asked me to do it three times, and three times I said no,” she revealed, drawing surprised gasps from the crowd.

Shepherd went on to explain that it took multiple people to convince her to take the job, including her best friend John Murray. But Murphy also felt it was an important move for her to make.

She recalled, “Eddie Murphy told me, ‘Sherri you need to do The View, they need to see you there.’ And I remember saying, it’s not enough money.”

Shepherd ultimately joined The View as a guest host in 2005 after making her name as a comedy star across film and television. Her stint on the hit show included some hilarious moments, including the time she professed her love for Prince while live on-air.

She later left her role as a permanent host on the show in 2014, though she has returned to guest host multiple times over the years.

“When you do The View, they love to give you so many awards. They gave me the good mother award, the single mother award, the tired mother but you made it through award,” she joked, before adding, “The View literally changes your world because once you get on there, every door opens, it changes everything.”

She continued acting outside of The View, landing roles in Think Like A Man, 30 Rock and her own sitcom on the Lifetime network titled Sherri.

“Doing The View changed my life,” she confessed.
