Jamie Lynn Spears suffered from the spotlight after getting pregnant at 15, prompting her to leave in the prime of her PCA tenure as Zoey Brooks on the Nickelodeon hit show Zoey 101.

Since the release of her 2022 memoir Things I Should Have Said, as well as her return to Hollywood in Netflix‘s Sweet Magnolias and the Zoey 101 reboot Zoey 102 (which is now available to stream on Paramount+), Spears has been opening up about her previous struggles.

On the Sirius XM podcast Better Tomorrow with Hannah Brown, Spears told podcast host and former The Bachelorette star Hannah Brown about how difficult it was to step back from the Nickelodeon series.

“That was something I took responsibility for [in a] way that made sense for me,” she explained. “That doesn’t make sense for everyone else, but it made sense for me.”

She revealed that back in 2008, she received tremendous backlash for her personal decisions surrounding her pregnacy.

“The whole world came down and told me I was the worst human alive for doing so and that every young girl who ever watched my show was going to be ruined because of me and my personal decision,” she shared.

She has publicly blamed the press for causing her to take a break from the industry and to move to Mississippi, the latter of which she disclosed in her memoir to be her mother’s idea. According to BuzzFeed News, she was “banished” into isolation with no cellphone at a location that she still is uncertain of to this day.

However, she told Brown that her isolation gave her a “much different outlook” on the headlines surrounding her and her life. She explained that “being in a small town,” where the store clerks don’t “care about who you are, what you’re doing, or who’s taking your picture,” was essential as she coped with the public’s perceptions of her.

“Interacting with people like that on a daily basis makes you have a much different outlook whenever a newspaper writes a bad headline about you that’s not true,” she said. “Like, you know what, that doesn’t matter. These are the people that matter.”

Zoey 102 is now streaming on Paramount+.
