New Apple TV+ Series ‘Masters Of The Air’ Salutes Soldiers From World War II

A new, limited series is coming to Apple TV+ with all your favorite stars. Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are teaming up to produce Masters of the Air, a nine-episode drama set during World War II.

While the team behind the camera is a well-known trio, the leads of the series are just as famous. Per a press release shared with Decider today, Masters of the Air stars Austin Butler, Anthony Boyle, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, Nkuti Gatwa, Barry Keoghan, Rafferty Law, Nate Mann, and Callum Turner.

This show is based on a true story, which was detailed in Donald L. Miller’s book Masters Of The Air. The book follows the 100th Bomb Group — or the “Bloody Hundredth” — who conducted bombing raids in Nazi Germany under poor physical and psychological conditions. The show depicts the lives of men like the ones featured in Miller’s book as they fight Hitler in an action-packed, dramatic tale.

Goetzman, one of three executive producers, spoke about film’s production in today’s press release, sharing, “We’re thrilled that Apple TV+ has given us the opportunity to combine the efforts of so many talented people, on-screen and behind the camera, to tell this important story.”

This will be the third project for the executive producing team of Goetzman, Hanks and Spielberg. The three of them previously worked on Band Of Brothers and The Pacific. Masters of the Air also reunites Hanks and Butler, who starred together in last year’s Elvis.

In a Times of London profile of Butler published in August, Butler recalled that Hanks was the one to convince him to sign on to Masters of the Air after Elvis, in which Butler memorably played the titular singer.

“You have immersed yourself so deeply in Elvis that, for your mental health, it would be wise to go straight into something else,” Hanks had told Butler before he joined his WWII show.

Apple TV+ is expected to globally roll out the first two episodes of Masters of the Air Jan. 26, 2024. The streamer will then drop one new episode every Friday through March 15, 2024.
