Oppenheimer is finally coming to digital platforms, four months after the movie opened in theaters. Starting next week, you’ll be able to buy or rent the film online, and you’ll also be able to buy the movie on DVD.

Christopher Nolan’s biopic—which chronicles the life of the man who invented the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer—is the third highest-grossing film of the year so far, with nearly $949 million at the worldwide box office. It’s an incredible feat for a three-hour, R-rated, historical drama, and it’s largely thanks to the “Barbenheimer” event this summer. But while Barbie, which came out on the same day in theaters, hit digital two months ago, Nolan held out for a more traditional, pre-COVID digital and physical media release.

In the days where most films come to digital after about 45 days in theaters, it’s been an unusually long wait time.  But given the big potential Oppenheimer has at this year’s Oscars, it’s still possible that Universal will release Oppenheimer streaming on Peacock before the end of the year. Here’s what you should know about how to watch Oppenheimer online, and when to expect to see Oppenheimer streaming on Peacock.

Where to watch Oppenheimer online:

Beginning on Tuesday, November 21, Oppenheimer will be available to buy and rent digitally on Amazon PrimeGoogle PlayApple TVVudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime, the film costs $19.99 to pre-order.

Oppenheimer will also be available on DVD,  4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray beginning on Tuesday, November 21. The physical media will come with over three hours of special features, including a short documentary The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer (which is also available on the digital copy), a feature on the 65 mm black and white film in the movie, a press conference panel with the cast and crew, a short film about the real Oppenheimer.

When will Oppenheimer be streaming on Peacock?

Oppenheimer will likely be on Peacock eventually because it is a Universal release, and Peacock is the Universal streaming platform. The Oppenheimer streaming release date has not yet been announced, but we can guess when it will be on Peacock based on previous Universal movie releases.

The last big Universal release, Strays, began streaming on Peacock on October 6, about seven weeks after opening in theaters, and about one month after hitting digital platforms. Obviously, Oppenheimer took a lot longer to come to digital platforms than Strays—but if it follows the same Peacock release strategy, it’s possible you will see Oppenheimer streaming on Peacock the Friday before Christmas, in December 2024. It would make sense, to help get more eyeballs and hype on the film before the Oscar nominations.

This is all speculation, of course. If you want to watch Oppenheimer at home right away, you can do so by buying or renting the film on Tuesday.
