Two of the biggest names in women’s soccer will say goodbye to the sport during tonight’s 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) championship game.

World Cup champions Megan Rapinoe, a winger for OL Reign (the NWSL team based in Seattle), and Ali Kreiger, a right/center back for NJ/NY Gothams FC, are both retiring from professional soccer this season.

As if it was written in the stars, the two close friends will play their last match against each other.

On their way to the Championship, the OL Reign and NJ/NY Gothams FC both beat two higher-seeded teams including the first-seed and home team, San Diego Wave FC.

One game remains in the 2023 NWSL season, and no matter what the outcome is, the NWSL will have a new first-time champion; neither team has won an NWSL title before.
