Christopher Nolan has one request for fans planning on watching Oppenheimer at home: buy it on Blu-ray.

At “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer” event on Monday night (Nov. 13), the critically-acclaimed director explained how his historic thriller has obviously “been quite a ride” for him and the cast and crew, per Variety.

“And now it is time for me to release a home version of the film,” he continued. “I’ve been working very hard on it for months. I’m known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but, the truth is, the way the film goes out at home is equally important.”

He recalled his 2008 superhero epic The Dark Knight as “one of the first films” he formatted “specially for Blu-ray release” when it was “a new form.”

“And in the case of Oppenheimer, we put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version… and trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you,” he said.

Nolan’s pro-Blu-ray sentiments may also come from the way he wishes for viewers to experience the film. Nolan described IMAX as “a portal into a level of emotion that you can’t get from other formats” in an interview promoting IMAX screenings of the film.

“It allows you to fully immerse yourself in the story,” he said. Tickets to see Oppenheimer in IMAX with 70mm film, which was only available in 19 theaters across the country, were even being sold for quite a chunk of change.

Serving as the latter half of “Barbenheimer,” this summer’s cinematic phenomenon that saw a resurgence of movie theater-goers heading to their local cinemas, the film went head to head with Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie at the box office.

While Barbie is expected to make its way to Max, being that it was produced by Warner Bros., Oppenheimer will likely hit Peacock through its distribution by Universal Pictures, per Variety. As of Nov. 13, Nolan’s film has made over $948,000,000 worldwide, per IMDb.
