‘The Marvels’ Star Iman Vellani Says She Doesn’t “Want To Focus” On The Film’s Box Office Struggles: “That’s For Bob Iger”

The Marvels star Iman Vellani is not letting her new Marvel film’s box office blunder get to her. In fact, she believes it’s someone else’s problem to worry about.

In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, the actress highlighted that she doesn’t “want to focus on something that’s not even in [her] control.”

“Because what’s the point?” she asked. “That’s for Bob Iger.”

The Disney CEO has previously blamed Marvel Studios’ box office struggles on its excess of content on Disney+, explaining that they “had not been in the TV business at any significant level” prior to launching its streaming content.

“Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention,” he told CNBC‘s David Faber in July. “That is, I think, more of the cause than anything.”

According to Deadline, The Marvels suffered the lowest opening weekend of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, garnering $47 million domestically.

Vellani explained that the box office “has nothing to do with” her.

“I’m happy with the finished product, and the people that I care about enjoyed the film,” she continued. “It’s genuinely a good time watching this movie, and that’s all we can ask for with these films. It has superheroes, it take place in space, it’s not that deep and it’s about teamwork and sisterhood. It’s a fun movie, and I’m just so happy that I can share it with people.”

Vellani also reflected on Stephen King, who despite not being a Marvel fan, called out online critics bashing the new movie.

“Having Stephen King in anyone’s corner is pretty awesome,” Vellani shared.

King had taken to X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) last Sunday (Nov. 12), and wrote the following:

“I don’t go to MCU movies, don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant. Why gloat over failure?”

In a different tweet, he also deemed some of the backlash may be “adolescent fanboy hate.”

“You know, ‘Yuck! GIRLS!'”

The Marvels is now in theaters.
