‘Shadow and Bone’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons

Netflix has canceled its hit fantasy drama Shadow and Bone after two seasons.

The platform is also scrapping a planned Six of Crows spinoff, for which scripts have been written.

Since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came to an end, streamers and studios have been reviewing their content plans. According to Deadline, Netflix is also cancelling Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall.

Author Leigh Bardugo, whose YA books were the basis for the show, addressed the news in a statement posted to social media on Wednesday.

“Friends, by now you’ve probably heard that there will be no season 3 for Shadow and Bone and no Six of Crows spinoff,” she wrote. “The news hit me hard. I’m heartbroken and deeply disappointed, but I’m also trying to hold onto my very real gratitude. Most authors never get to see their work adapted. Many who do end up regretting the experience. I’m one of the lucky few who can look at an adaptation with pride and tremendous joy.”

Bardugo then thanked the show’s writers, crew, cast, and fans.

The series first premiered in April 2021 and centered on the kingdom of Ravka from Bardugo’s books, where both humans and magic users known as Grisha exist.

It starred Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkhov and Ben Barnes as General Kirigan, in addition to Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan and Calahan Skogman.

Patrick Gibson and Jack Wolfe were introduced to the Grishaverse in Season 2, which recruited Daegan Fryklind as co-showrunner.

Showrunner Eric Heisserer said earlier this year that scripts had already been penned for a Six of Crows spinoff series and that it would premiere around the same time as the next season of Shadow and Bone.

Season 2 of Shadow and Bone ended with some major cliffhangers and there has not yet been any mention of shopping either series elsewhere.
