Let the games begin! Squid Games is back on Netflix, but in a different form. Instead of being a terrifying, yet artful, fictional series about a group of regular people competing in deadly games for a large cash prize, Squid Games: The Challenge is a reality show with the same premise. Except there’s no death. For all we know.

Ahead of the show’s premiere, it received heavy backlash from contestants who claimed they spent “hours” in freezing weather and faced medical issues while filming. Another contestant called it the “cruelest, meanest thing” they’ve ever endured.

At the time, Netflix denied the accusations, writing in a statement that they “care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew.”

The series, which began casting in June 2022, follows 456 players as they compete in a variety of games to win a $4.56 million cash prize. It has been said that the cash reward is the largest in game and reality show history.
