Cobra Kai lives on. While the hit Netflix series may be coming to an end after Season 6, Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, both of whom have starred in different versions of The Karate Kid, just revealed that they are teaming up for the first time to make a new movie in the beloved franchise.

The duo made the announcement in a YouTube video earlier today. They also launched their “global search” to find the next “karate kid.”

Jonathan Entwistle, who worked on shows like I Am Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World, is set to direct the currently untitled Sony Pictures film. As of now, plot details are being kept under wraps.

However, we do know that it will be a continuation of what we’ve already seen in the franchise, per Variety. Macchio will reprise his role as Daniel LaRusso, which he originated in the 1984 film and continued throughout Netflix’s Emmy-nominated Cobra Kai series. Meanwhile, Chan will return as Mr. Han, the martial arts master based on Mr. Miyagi who he first played in the 2010 remake starring Jaden Smith.

It’s clear that Macchio isn’t ready to stop milking the Karate Kid cow — and rightfully so. Decades after starring in the original movie (and its two spinoffs), he appeared in Cobra Kai alongside William Zabka, who reprised his role as Daniel’s OG nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. The streaming platform announced earlier this year that the show’s upcoming sixth season will be its last.

With Cobra Kai coming to an end, fans are just as reluctant as Macchio to let go of Karate Kid. After news broke of the upcoming movie, many took to social media to share their excitement.

“A karate kid multiverse of madness?!!! I’m in,” one wrote, while another added, “This is a damn dream come true😭😭 this was so unexpected but I can’t wait for this omg.”

A third person said, “Is this really happening? Tell me I am not dreaming y’all,” while someone else chimed in, “I have no idea where this is going, but I’ll be there in the front row!”

The next Karate Kid is set to premiere in theaters on Dec. 13, 2024.
