The View co-host Sara Haines always tries to see the good in people, but when she attempted to understand those who are homophobic in the name of religion, Sunny Hostin was quick to shut her down on this morning’s episode of the hit daytime talk show.

Haines began her argument with comments from “highly religious” House Speaker Mike Johnson, who claimed our culture is “dark and depraved” and alleged one in four high school students identifies as LGBTQ+, remarks he made while speaking on an Oct. 3 Zoom on the World Prayer Network, per Rolling Stone.

Haines said “some people are misinformed through their faith” because “gay people have always been here.” She adds that it’s just that now they are finally “safe to come out of the closet.”

The co-host went on to discuss her church-going upbringing in Iowa, and how her parents had a hard time accepting the LGBTQ+ community until their own son came out as gay.

“As someone who grew up in an area where everyone went to church, I have a slight empathy for people that don’t get it because some families — I remember my parents telling me not to question religion,” she said. “I think it might’ve taken my parents having a gay son to come to terms … It took prayer and a lot of time for my mom to understand and they’re not bad people.”

She added, “I’m just saying I think some people need to take another look at what their religion is. Is it bringing people in? Or is it teaching you hate?”

Going back to Johnson’s comments, Hostin found it hypocritical for someone to cast judgment on another’s sexual preferences when they may have some demons of their own.

“Isn’t it hypocrisy, Sara?” she asked. “Because that Mike Johnson that you just quoted — the speaker of the House — isn’t he the same one that has a deal with his son so that they monitor each other’s porn use?”

Hostin later clarified that Johnson and his son are “accountability partners” who use a “monitoring app” that prevents porn viewing.

“I don’t know which chapter and verse of the Bible says that’s OK but I haven’t read it yet,” Hostin continued. “So in terms of relying on faith, that is the height of hypocrisy — it’s hiding on your faith to cherry-pick issues.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
