With the upcoming arrival of Fargo‘s fifth season, Jon Hamm has someone to thank for his character’s pierced nipples being in tip-top — or should I say nip-top — shape.

At FX’s premiere screening of the new season held last Wednesday (Nov. 15) at Nya Studios in Los Angeles, the actor opened up about the creation of his character, North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman, per Variety.

“I had to have some very blue latex put on my nipples, and then they cast a resoundingly lifelike pair of nipples, which they then pierced and placed over my own nipples, and we shot said nipples,” he revealed. “The crew doesn’t get enough credit, but there was a dedicated nippleologist.”

Hamm’s co-star Juno Temple (who plays Dorothy “Dot’ Lyon) was stunned, asking him, “A fake nipple?”

Series creator, writer, director, and executive producer Noah Hawley summed up the nipple garb as follows: “We all live in a Tiger King America.”

Decider previously reported that Hamm said his character was actually pitched to him by Hawley as “Sheriff Joe Arpaio mixed with the Tiger King.”

“There’s several examples of those guys throughout the country, unfortunately, who think that, not only the law doesn’t apply, but they make the law,” he said. “So it applies to other people, but not them. They exist outside of it extra-judicially or something… You can see it in the Proud Boys, you can see it in the Boogaloos, and all the other bullshit militias that are these Looney Tunes cosplaying as wannabe soldiers.”

The new season of the dark comedy crime drama anthology series introduces a whole new cast of characters, including Joe Keery, Lamorne Morris, and Richa Moorjani.

Season 5 of Fargo premieres tonight on FX at 10/9c. Next-day streaming is available on Hulu.
